I am not sure why the wizard was able to successfully validate the FTP server setting when the FTP server connection is blocked by the Windows Firewall. Finally the fix is to restart the FTP service (see Lesson #1 on “ Setting Up IIS 8 FTP Server Lessons Learned”). This leads to me think the problem is on the FTP server. I also tried running curl on a Windows computer, and got the timeout error too. It should list the file and directory on the FTP server.

(I will publish what I learn from curl in a future post).įrom vCSA console, enter “ curl -u : -l ”. Recently I am also learning curl to transfer file, so I’m a little familiar with curl. This gives me a hint that vCSA backup uses curl to transfer the backup file from vCSA to the FTP location. In the log file, there is a curl error “Connection time-out”. Please check logs for details”, but it does not provide much details or the location of the log file.Īfter some digging, I found the backup log file in /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log. The backup fails with “BackupManager encountered an exception. Lesson #3: Use curl to troubleshoot vCSA backup errorĪfter entering the correct settings, vCSA backup wizard validates the settings and starts the backup. Otherwise, the error message is “Access to the remote server is denied. There is a “|” between the hostname and username. See my Lesson #2 in “ Setting Up IIS 8 FTP Server Lessons Learned” about the FTP virtual host name login. Lesson #2: vCSA backup supports the FTP virtual host name if entering the username correctly - | Otherwise, the error message is “FTP location is invalid”. There is a “/” between the host name and folder name. If using FTP protocol, the backup location is not just the FTP server host name or IP address it MUST include the folder name. Starting a backup is quite easy - login the vCSA web console and click Backup button on the Summary page (see this post for the step-by-step screen shots).Įven it looks a very simple task, I have learned a few lessons when configuring the vCSA backup. You don’t need to change any of the default variables, it should connect right awayĬonnecting to ESXi 5.X and prior will require you specify SCP in place of SFTP in the connection dialog.VCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) 6.5 comes with the built in backup functionality. When you are at the root of the filesystem, you will see this:Īnd you can access any other folders from there, for example: /var/logĬonnecting to ESXi with ESXi 6.0 and ESXi 6.5 is pretty much default. Navigate up one level in the right-hand pane of the interface Specify for SFTP server: shell /usr/lib64/ssh/sftp-serverĪnd then save the settings (which include the SFTP server)Īs soon as you connect, you will be in the root user folder which should be empty.

Specify for SFTP server: shell /usr/libexec/sftp-server The settings for VCSA 6.5 and VCSA 6.0 differ slightly so for VCSA 6.5: In the new connection dialog, specify the Host name, User name and then click the Advanced button It is much more expedient just to reconfigure WinSCP and leave the VCSA the way it is! In order to use WinSCP, you will need to change where WinSCP looks for the sftp-server binaries. VMware KB 2107727 recommends changing the shell that the entire VCSA uses from /bin/appliancesh to /bin/bash prior to using WInSCP, then changing it back when you are done! This is a ridiculous waste of time and unnecessary re-configuration of the VCSA.

This occurs because the default shell for the VCSA 6.5 is not bash. If you try to connect to the VCSA with WinSCP in a default configuration, you will get the following message:
#Vcenter 6.5 appliance remote backup powercli install
Install WInSCP with a Commander Interface

There are a few issues, however, when it comes to connecting to the VCSA with WinSCP that I will show you how to work around without reconfiguring the default shell of your VCSA! Getting WinSCPīrowse to: to download the WinSCP Installation Package If you are working from a Windows desktop or server, there’s no more convenient utility than WinSCP for copying files securely between Windows and Linux Systems.
